Unfit girls who have not exercised for over a year are being offered free gym membership to help change their ways.

Young women living in Potters Bar or South Mimms and aged 14 to 25 can apply for free passes under Hertsmere Borough Council’s new project.

The authority, in partnership with Hertsmere Leisure, is offering a free three-month health and fitness or swimming membership at the Furzefield Centre, in Mutton Lane, Potters Bar.

During the time, participants must commit to exercise three times a week for 30 minutes, and agree to be weighed and measured.

The information is being gathered as part of a project in partnership with Hertsmere Council, which received £162,750 from the National Lottery funding to help women and girls get fit.

The results of the research will be used to encourage more women and girls to take up exercise and  look at the benefits of lifestyle changes.

Cllr Brenda Batten, who is responsibke for leisure, culture and health, said: “This is a fabulous opportunity for young women and girls to get fit, and what better time to start than at the beginning of the year.”
