Labour have picked Chipping Barnet resident Amy Trevethan to fight the seat for the party in the next General Election.

The 22-year-old is amongst one of the youngest parliamentary candidates standing in the election in 2015.

She said: “I’m delighted that Labour members have chosen me as their candidate for the next General Election.

“The support of local campaigners is really heartening ahead of a crucial 18 months for our area. Chipping Barnet is my home and I want to see it thrive.”

Her main opponent is Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Theresa Villiers - who has held the Chipping Barnet seat for the past nine years.

Ms Trevethan also standing in this year’s local elections for the Underhill ward.

She added: “It’s incredibly concerning to know that even in an affluent area like Chipping Barnet, we have increasing numbers of people turning to the local food bank because they can’t afford to eat.

“I’m proud to be standing for a Labour party that will reduce living costs, invest in jobs and the economy, reduce transport costs for Londoners, repeal the bedroom tax and repeal the Tories’ tax cut for millionaires.

The Tories just don’t care about ordinary people and they don’t care about Chipping Barnet.

“That’s why the Tory council here has shipped jobs out of the area as part of the OneBarnet programme of mass privatisation.”
