An MP said he was “amazed” at the work of Barnet’s only Jewish special needs school when he visited on Friday.
Mike Freer, who represents Finchley and Golders Green, took a tour of the Kisharon Day School, in Finchley Road, to see its work first hand.
The day school is run by Golders Green-based charity Kisharon, which provides work opportunities and supported living for Jewish adults with learning difficulties.
Mr Freer met headteacher Sora Kopfstein and chief executive Beverly Jacobson, as well as the chairman and trustees.
Dr Jacobson explained that, due to medical advances, there had been a significant increase in the number of children with complex needs attending the school since it first opened.
She also told Mr Freer about the importance of pupils gaining independence at secondary school level in the hope of moving into supported living when they leave.
Dr Jacobson said: “The expectations for people with learning difficulties who are leaving school, is very different now – we have really turned things round for our students. Many have jobs in the local community and their social network has quadrupled.”
Speaking after the visit, Mr Freer said: “Living in the area, I’ve known Kisharon a long time and I’ve always been supportive.
“I’m quietly amazed at the work they do and how much they can cram into a small area. It is a testament to the parents and the staff, and a joy to see how the children respond.”
