Capita’s takeover of Barnet Council services looks set to claim the jobs of 130 staff who have declined a move to places as far away as Carlisle.

The business processes firm won two contracts to take over the authority’s back office services and core council functions last year under the controversial One Barnet outsourcing sceme.

Capita quickly announced it would be redeploying council departments across the UK to save cash.

Under the customer services contract, Capita has promised savings of £125million over ten years but is moving jobs as far away as Carlisle and Sheffield.

An internal consultation with the 223 affected staff in customer services, IT, and pensions, revenues and benefits has now been completed.

Capita was able to find alternative roles in the borough for 78 employees, while five decided to leave their posts and ten more have taken other jobs at Capita.

But a further 130 remain on course for redundancy and are currently seeing out their notice.

A Capita spokesperson said in a statement: “We will continue to provide career support and training to employees at risk.

“So far ten people have redeployed to other jobs in Capita and we are helping the remaining employees still at risk to find roles in the company where possible, or to find alternative work.

“The customer and support group partnership was set up to reduce costs and improve services to residents in Barnet.

“From the outset, we proposed operational, technology and efficiency changes that would affect how, and as a result where, we deliver some CSG services.

“These changes will deliver value for money to the council and provide a better service to residents.”
