A fashion student is “absolutely thrilled” after her designs led her all the way to the winner’s podium in a national competition.

Middlesex University student Rhiannon Wakefield came first in the final of last night’s Fashion Awareness Direct competition in central London.

The 22-year-old Hendon woman was inspired to create patterns for men’s clothing after listening to Debussy’s prelude La Cathédrale Engloutie.

Professor Clare Johnston, FAD judge and head of textiles at The Royal College of Art, said: “Rhiannon Wakefield’s collection combined colour and print with great shapes. It conveyed drama, emotion and a real passion for design.”

Rhiannon took to the catwalk to celebrate her victory, and was awarded a £1,000 cash prize.

She said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have won the competition.  It’s an amazing opportunity to have even reached the finals, but then to have won and be recognised for my work is incredible.  I’m still in shock.”
