People with dementia and their carers can meet others in the same boat when two new clubs open in the borough.

The Alzheimer’s Society is to launch dementia cafes in Mill Hill and Golders Green in February and March.

Both clubs will be aimed at giving people with dementia and their families the chance to meet in a relaxed environment, take part in activities and get access to help and advice.

Similar clubs which meet in New Barnet and the Finchley Memorial Hospital have had huge success since they were launched last year.

Councillor Rajput, Barnet Borough Council's cabinet member for adults, said: “The cafes already up and running are having a really positive impact on people’s lives and I am delighted to see that another two cafes will be on offer to people very soon.

“Having attended the launch of the New Barnet cafe I have seen first hand what a good way they are for people to socialise with other people living with similar problems, as well as their families and carers.”

The dementia cafe at the Finchley Memorial Hospital, in Granville Road, was opened by its founder, former mayor Councillor Lisa Rutter, last August.

The Mill Hill cafe is due to be launched on February 28 and the Golders Green cafe will open on March 18.

Jessica Ellis, dementia cafe co-ordinator, said: “It is so important to offer this unique and creative service for people with dementia and their carers as it can be a real escape from diagnosis and offer something refreshing and fun.”
