A talented teenager with aspirations to be a future Paralympic champion has been given a new wheelchair by customers at a bingo club.

Mill Hill boy Michael Murphy, who represents Great Britain in the para equestrian dressage, was given the powered wheelchair to boost his mobility from Beacon Bingo, in Cricklewood.

The 16-year-old has a condition which causes nerve damage and muscle weakness, and after recent spinal surgery cannot walk unaided.

Provided by charity CHIPS, founded by the casino and gaming industry to provide specialised powered wheelchairs for children with severe mobility problems.

Michael’s mother Sue said: “Representing Great Britain in Para Dressage is tremendous, and the sport itself is both physically and mentally beneficial for Michael’s condition, but it is costly, so we are all so grateful for this kind donation which is going to make such a difference to Michael and help him to live a normal life with the independence he needs.

“Before his operation he was well on his way to his dream of taking part in the Paralympics and although he’s back on track I’m sure this new powered wheelchair is going to help build his confidence and spur him on further. Thank you so much.”

The Cricklewood bingo club's manager Rob Black said: “It is wonderful to hear what a difference this new wheelchair is going to make to Michael’s development and his day to day life. He is such a talented young man and we wish him all the best on his path to success.”
