A dance school that won a huge haul of trophies at a national competition is worried about its future.

K’s School of Dance, which is based in Maxwell Park Community Centre in Borehamwood, returned from a competition in Romney in Kent last weekend with 159 trophies between 27 dancers.

Run by JJ Promotions, the competition involved children from across the country who competed in rock 'n' roll, freestyle, street dance and contemporary, both singly and in groups.

Karen Carloni, who has run the dance school from the community centre in Maxwell Road for the past 14 years, said she was “delighted” with the children’s success.

She said: “They did fantastically well, gaining trophies in a wide range of disciplines. We have some very talented young dancers and they did us proud.”

The dance teacher said the school was heavily involved in the life of the town, raising money for charities such as Clic Sargent and taking an active part in the Borehamwood Carnival and Family Day.

However, with Maxwell Park Community Centre earmarked by Hertfordshire County Council as a possible site for a school, she fears for her organisation’s future, and for the 70 children who dance with her every week.

Ms Carloni said: “If they bulldoze Maxwell Park Community Centre we’ll have nowhere else to go.

“Because the hall is so affordable I’ve managed to keep prices low, meaning we can take people of all backgrounds – which will change if we’re forced to move somewhere else.

“We’ve been keeping kids off the street for 14 years by giving them something to aim for.

“There are many other groups like us that use Maxwell Park, and I fear for them as well if it is knocked down.

“We should fight to make sure the council finds another site to build the school.”
