A great-grandmother was surrounded by friends and family as she celebrated her 100th birthday with a sing-song and a slice of cake.

Dorothy Conway, known as Dolly, held a party to mark her birthday at Jewish Care’s Rosetrees care home in Asher Loftus Way, Friern Barnet.

Dolly was joined by her family including two daughters, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren as well as old friends.

She was presented with a telegram from Queen Elizabeth by her son-in-law David Bendel, who wore a Prince Phillip mask, because meeting him has always been a dream of hers.

The party guests were entertained by singer William Smith, who sang all of Dolly’s favourites, including an acapella version of Hello Dolly.

Dolly said: “I’ve had a great day. I am totally overwhelmed by all the celebrations and I couldn’t be happier than to spend my birthday with my friends and family at Rosetrees.

“People always ask me what’s the secret to my longevity and the real secret is a sherry now and again.”

Dolly was born in 1914 and met her husband Leonard during the Second World War.

The pair married in 1947 and had two daughters, Janis and Gillian, five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Dolly will spend the rest of the week celebrating with family and a special tea at Claridges.

Janis Bendel, Dolly’s eldest daughter, said: “We’ve had a wonderful time celebrating my mum’s birthday at Rosetrees. Jewish Care treated us all like one big family and it’s really special knowing that my mother is cared for so beautifully.”
