A rugby club in Barnet had a chance to prove its worth when it hosted the biggest cup competition in the county for the first time.

More than 1,300 boys competed in the all-day county cup tournament at Barnet Elizabethan’s home ground in Byng Road on March 29.

The teams, in under 9s and under 10s age groups, were split into categories depending on their abilities before a series of tournaments got underway.

Under 10s coach Desmond McCarthy said the tournament is usually held at a bigger, more established rugby club and he said it was a great opportunity for one of the county’s smaller clubs to show what they can offer.

He said: “It was an amazing success – I’m sure there were a few people who didn’t think we could do it, but it was a great day and the weather was good too.

“It took a huge effort over six weeks, particularly from Phil Aspinall, Edgar D’Mello and Aidy Heesom, but it was a great privilege for the club and we received a lot of compliments from other teams.”
