Middlesex University Students’ Union has won its first ever national award for work to improve sustainability and the environment.

The Hendon-based university's MDXSU union was awarded an NUS Green Impact bronze award at the annual gala dinner at the NUS Services Convention.

The union has worked on a number of ways to improve the campus and the local community, including campaigning for more water fountains, setting up an allotment with a view to creating a soup kitchen, and organising a Fairtrade stall on campus.

MDXSU President Sayed Alkadiri said: "Sustainability was one of our union's top campaign priorities this year so I am ecstatic that we have been awarded green impact status, MDXSU’s first award in our 20 year history.

“In 2013/14 we have been promoting sustainability and good practice in environmental behaviour at the forefront of everything we do.

“I’m really proud of our work on this initiative and the team here is looking forward to expanding on this next year by winning the Green Impact silver award.”

More than 100 students’ unions across the UK took part in the competition.
