The future of a century-old church spire has been secured thanks to the generosity of a Friern Barnet congregation.

The Diocese of London closed the doors of All Saints Church in Oakleigh Park South in early March after cracks were discovered in the spire's base.

The initial work, which will cost £5,000, have already been paid for by the congregation but vicar Fr Gregory Platten said the complete repair may cost upwards of £100,000.

After this initial repair, the church will apply for a grant.

Rodell, a specialist works and access company, is refurbishing the Bath stone spire, which is around 100ft tall.

Fr Gregory said: "It's a huge amount of money. And quite a lot is needed for the inside too.

"You don't want to be putting people in danger. One of the things we really pride ourselves in is keeping the church open, even during the week. I think if we left if much longer the potential for an accident would be great. I'm glad we have done everything we can."

All Saints Church was founded in 1882 by John Miles as a gift for his son, who became the church's first vicar. The majority of the church structure is original.

Fr Platten said he will be relieved when the repairs are finished and the church doors can be opened.
