A riot of music, light and dance will bring Potters Bar to a standstill as the town celebrates its historic carnival.

A procession of floats will bring the streets alive with colour as part of the annual event on Sunday.

Now in its 40th year, the carnival will include marching bands, school floats, beer tents and barbecues as well as other attractions.

Carnival committee member Tom Shirley said: “We really just want to give the people of Potters Bar a good time.

“It’s not so much about the people who turn up, it’s about the organisation that’s gone into it, and we’ve worked really hard to make sure this year’s is a huge success.

“Hopefully the weather will be on our side.”

The vehicle-only procession will leave the Canada Life car park at 12.30pm and walkers will join at Mount Grace Road at 1pm.

It will then weave into Darkes Lane, Mutton Lane and Elm Court for 2pm.

This year’s carnival includes the school’s art exhibition, as well as displays from the police, the ambulance service and other clubs.

There is no beneficiary to this year’s event, but donations will be made to various causes in the Potters Bar area.

Mr Shirley added: “It’s always a lot of fun and the people of Potters Bar love it, so we’re looking forward to it being a huge success as always."
