The jury in the trial of a mental health nurse accused of throwing a mother-of-two off the bonnet of her moving car, has been sent home for the night without reaching a verdict.

Jurors were initially sent out shortly before 1pm after listening to a final summary of the trial of Opelia Oka-Koi.

The 51-year-old of Galdana Avenue, High Barnet, has pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving following an incident on March 4 last year.

Christie McHugh, 33, was flung from Ophelia Oka-Koi’s car at a zebra crossing near the Lord Kitchener pub in East Barnet Road following an argument.

Ms Oka-Koi had parked in the pub car park before going to nearby Sainsbury’s to buy bread and cheese, but when she returned Mrs McHugh's husband, John, told her she should not have parked there.

Witnesses described a heated argument, with Mr and Mrs McHugh kicked and punched Ms Oka-Koi's car before Mrs McHugh then got onto the bonnet and began bouncing on it.

The nurse told jurors she was "panicking and confused" during the row, and "bolted" from the car park with Mrs McHugh on the bonnet.

Witnesses have described seeing the vehicle leave the car park with Mrs McHugh still on the bonnet, and turn right into East Barnet Road where she eventually slipped from the car and hit a  Belisha beacon.

She was reported dead at the scene.

The jury will return to continue to consider their verdict at 10am tomorrow.
