Pupils looked back to the way we were as part of their school’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Girls and boys at Livingstone Nursery and Primary School in New Barnet, dressed up in 1950s clothes to celebrate the school’s jubilee.

They used fountain pens and worked from old fashioned desks during lessons, before being shown newspaper clippings from the day the school opened.

The register from the day the school opened was on display, giving children the chance to see the names of pupils from days gone by.

Teacher Giovanna Phelan said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day. The children very much enjoyed learning about the history of it all and going back in time.

“We had our own 1950s museum and played traditional games in the playground, including the hula hoop and dancing.

“The old register was our star piece, it went down very well.”

The first bell for lessons sounded in September 1954, and on Saturday, former students were also invited back to the school to see the way things have changed.

They were treated to a fun day which included a giant barbecue, a live band playing 1950s music and dancing.

After the event, year three pupil Daniel Banyard, seven, said: “I really liked the band because they were really rocky.”
