Barnet and Southgate College will raise awareness about Adult Learners Week at shopping centres and libraries.

Students will celebrate the annual event by urging more people to take up learning a new subject later in life.

It runs from June 16 to 20 and the college, in Wood Street, High Barnet, will hold a series of workshops.

Former student Sema Ucunu, 43, moved to London from Turkey in 1997 and found a job as an administrator, before getting married and having a son.

But after becoming a single parent, she decided to study childcare after volunteering with Brookhill Nursery, in East Barnet, where her son attends.

She said: “Being a mature has helped me focus on my studies. It is a good feeling being older than most other students.

“I feel so happy when I am going to College to meet and chat with everyone – I have made so many friends and it keeps me young.

“It is a good feeling being older than most other students. I feel so happy.”

The roadshows will take place on Monday, June 16 at the Broadwalk, in Edgware, Hendon Library, on June 17, Wood Green Library on June 18 and Edmonton Shopping Centre on June 19.
