Labour wins postponed Colindale vote in Barnet Borough Council election

Times Series: Labour councillors celebrate their victory Labour councillors celebrate their victory

Labour has retained all three seats in Colindale, securing the party's largest ever number of councillors in the borough.

Longstanding councillors Gill Sargeant and Zakia Zubairi were re-elected alongside first-time councillor Nagus Narenthira. The three celebrated their victory as the results were announced at Hendon Town Hall this evening.

Labour's success came as no surprise to most, considering the party has held all three seats in the ward since 1968.

Despite the rest of Barnet's councillors being voted in last month, the Colindale election was postponed owing to the death of Green Party candidate Jessica Yorke, who died just a few days before the May 22 election.

The party narrowly missed out on securing a majority in last month's polls, with the Conservatives securing just two extra seats.

See how the evening progressed by reading our live blog from the count.

But following its success tonight, Labour has its largest number of members with 30 councillors - topping its current record of 26.

Leader of the Labour Group Councillor Alison Moore said: "It's  fantastic. We have had councillors in place here for several decades and it's a really emphatic victory.

"We now have the biggest Labour group we have ever had. We are within a hair's breadth of taking control of the council.

"It shows people of Barnet are clearly dismissive of the Conservatives' offer, which is mass privatisation."

New Labour councillor Narenthira has been part of the Labour Party for 15 years and said she was thrilled to have been given the opportunity to represent Colindale.

She said: "It's one of the happiest moments of my life.

"I'm passionate about infrastructure in Colindale and having lived here for a long time, I'm looking forward to starting work here."

Cllr Zubairi added: "We're so proud and we can't wait to continue our good work in Colindale."

Cllr Sargeant agreed. She said: "The result shows we've got a real support in Colindale."

But Conservative council leader Cllr Richard Cornelius was nowhere to be seen as results were announced, having made an appearance for a brief ten minutes just after 10.30pm.

The Colindale election had a turnout of 27.8 per cent, meaning just 3,210 people voted.

Labour took a staggering 68 per cent of the votes, representing a ten per cent swing to the party.

Cllr Sargeant received 2,088 votes, Cllr Zubairi got 2,015 and Cllr Narenthira 2,290.

Barnet Borough Council is now made up of 32 Conservative councillors, Labour has 30, and the Liberal Democrats have just one.

Dare to all the Cllr's / Mayor Boris / Barnet officials who always say COMMUNITY FIRST, so dare to all to put the community first over developers.
We as Locals spent our lives living and in coming future years we all want an area were it makes a symbol/example to all that our childrens/lives grow in an environment with overall stability. This can only happen if we locals stand as One and The Barnet / Labour etc do something about and NOT Big Talk No Action.
Urge all Locals put your voice if you do not this just gives an upper hand/liberty to take us locals for granted that if locals are not voicing they will just come, develop and go who will suffer ?......
(Note: this Developers(Directors
) are not living in the area - its us The Locals)
This place is in much need of: Good Hospitals. Schools or good cinemas with Good Restaurant eg Nando's, GBK, Jimmys, Chinese etc WERE by community can or comes out to-gather not more homes in an Already Over developed area.

This resounding election victory sends a strong message to Matthew Offord. The way things are going, Offord will be out of a job in 2015 and we will have a more hardworking MP back in.

Why would Mr. Offord be worried about 27.8 per cent turning out to vote for a seat that has been held by Labour since 1968?! Hardly a strong message but very much predicted by everyone including the Hendon Times. We certainly don't want the last MP who is devoid of any communication or social skills. I think he is the dullest man I have ever met.

Stop The Hyde Development@Homebase
. A new GP Surgery or Hospital is what is needed. Not ANOTHER development. Look around Asda & where the old Wicks were. The place is becoming more Claustrophobic with high rise apartments. Colindale will turn into a concrete jungle with no infrastructure to support this. Too many Car Dealerships and Appartments. Even more being built around West Hendon and at McDonalds Colindale. It's impossible to get Medical appointments around here. A new GP surgery is what is needed.

Something that can bring the whole Community together, like the Food Court at Oriental City had done for so many years...with school/community presentations on the big stage there also. Not a quick buck from developers. Please don't kill this Community with even more congestion. Developers are there to make a quick buck and leave.

To: the Chllr's (labour) / Party in Power / Mayor Boris / Barnet Council and to all relevant persons.
STOP TALKING BIG and SHOW SOME ACTION....... IF YOU REALLY CARE "Community First"
Take steps / action to the following:
1) CRIME which is just out of order in colindale.
2) OVER DEVELOPED and more development which is a clear favouritism to Developers over Local Community First.
3) NO INFRASTRUCTURE at all.
4) NOT enough open space / parks for the Locals.
5) Policing reduced due to so called common sense out of the window from the parties in control.
6) The Area itself is OVER FLOWED / out of line were-by its not capable any more.

Urging All locals to come to-gather and put a voice / petition etc.
Wake up: Colindale / Hendon / Burnt oak etc catchment areas.

Area is in much need of: Zero tolerance on crime etc.
Good Hospital / Schools / Cinema with Resturants eg Nando's / GBK / jimmey's / chinese etc

NOTE: We as Locals have every RIGHT and POWER over to this so call party (leaders) and the developers.
A simple message to all Lets Voice to-gather or else they will just have a upper hand and developers will just come, build and go..... WHO WILL SUFFER ?........

The interesting thing about the overall result, is that the smart Tory money expected to lose the council. Having sold the borough down the river with the Great One-Barnet Clearance-Sale (BUY A LOCAL STRATEGIC ASSET AT COST: TEN YEAR LOCK-IN), they didn't want to have to spend the next couple of terms fielding acrimonious comments on the performance of the companies many of them hold shares in, whom they have furnished with an absolute shedload of our money.

They were hoping for a minority Labour council (like that rather brilliant one we had in the 90s? The one that bought all the street-cleaning gear, that the Tories sold off at below market value after the following election? The council that made the wise decision to sell Barnet FC a controlling stake in Underhill for cost, rather than the one that spent many times the original sum, persecuting the football club (Which has now left the borough that it represents, because the Tory Council wouldn't deal with it), trying to establish that there was sharp practice in the deal.

How much did that enquiry cost? What did it end up saying?

Then there's Iceland ...

The next election will fall towards the middle of the ten year One Barnet period. Around the time, the various concerns who have bought a stake in our municipal logistical infrastructure decide to capitalize on their investment. They're going to put the screws on us - and this council is the same one that sold them all this stuff in the first place.

They've played this wrong.

@Local Colindale resident: Is there a petition that can be set up/Facebook page/Twitter group/Friends Of Colindale that can be contacted to bring some sense back to this whole affair before local apathy enables Colindale to be just Car Dealerships, Developers' Quick Sales all ultimately causing a loss of much needed Community facilities and infrastructure for the Colindale as we know it?
