Rugby mad children donned their favourite colourful costumes when they were invited to watch a match.

The Hive Community Trust invited schoolchildren from across Barnet and Harrow to watch the London Broncos play against the Wildnes Vikings.

It was held as part of the Broncos’ Nations Day, and pupils were asked to come dressed in colourful outfits from across the globe.

Hive Community Trust manager Steven Barron said: “The day was a great success. We’ve been doing a lot of work with the schools with children playing rugby league during lessons so we wanted to do something to give them the chance to see a top-class game.”

First prize for costumes went to Stag Lane Junior School, Edgware, whose Wales-themed outfits won them £500, which will be spent on sports equipment.

Taking inspiration from Scotland was Pinner Wood School, in Harrow, who won the £300 second prize.

In third place was Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School, Harrow, whose costumes representing Tonga, Fiji and USAd won £200.

Glebe Primary School in Harrow, Harrow College’s Harrow Weald Campus and Canons High School in Edgware also took part.

All children who participated were been given their very own rugby ball as a souvenir of the day.

It was supported by Selco Builders Warehouse, principal sponsor of the Broncos.

Marketing director Helen Cooper said: “It was wonderful to see the stands packed full of children. They are the Broncos supporters of tomorrow.

“There were some great costumes on display which really added some colour to The Hive. We are delighted to offer the opportunity to bring the youngsters back to The Hive to watch another Broncos game.”
