Young people from across Hertsmere took part in a variety of sports yesterday as part of the 20th annual Herts Youth Games.

More than 70 young people from the borough took part in the one-day event at Wodson Park Sports Centre in Ware.

The games are held to inspire young people to get involved in competitive sport.

Team Hertsmere was made up of girls and boys aged seven to 16 from schools in Borehamwood, Bushey, Potters Bar and Radlett.

Councillor Brenda Batten, who is responsible for leisure, culture and health at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: "Sport is a great way for young people to be active and have fun and the Herts Youth Games is a fantastic event which attracts around 1,500 young people from all over Hertfordshire each year.

“Winning is an important part of competitive sport – as seen by Lewis Hamilton in the British Grand Prix – but it’s also the taking part that counts. There is a great spirit at the event and it was great to witness the sea of smiling faces especially from Team Hertsmere.

“For some it was their first experience of competitive sport and as a result lots of them go on to join local clubs afterwards which just goes to show the power of sport and the event.

“Thanks go to everyone who took part, including our volunteers and volunteer team managers."
