Onlookers paused in silent tribute to mark the bravery of the men from Arkley who were killed during the Great War.

Hundreds gathered at St Peter’s Church, in Arkley, for a memorial service to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the war on Sunday.

The service, conducted by the Reverend Tristan Chapman, was attended by MP Teresa Villiers, Cllr David Longstaff and representatives of the Arkley Club.

Names of those from Arkley who died were read out and a two minutes silence followed the Last Post.

Stan Angel, a veteran of the Second World War, read the words of commemoration as 12-year-old Zara Peart also gave a speech about the war.

Following the service, a wreath was laid by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant at the Village War Memorial in Barnet Road, and the congregation went to Arkley Club where a second memorial service was held.

Reverend Chapman said: “It was a solemn and prayerful time, but also one of thankfulness.”
