Meghan Byrne of Barnet Copthall Swimming Club returned from the National Age Group Championships in Sheffield with a haul of three medals.

Barnet Copthall enjoyed immense success at the National Age Group (12 to 14 years) and Youth Championships (15 years and over), with the galas being held at the same venue.

Thirteen-year-old Byrne won gold in the 200m and 400m freestyle races as well as collecting a bronze in the 100m freestyle.

In the 200m butterfly, 13-year-old Felix Cheng won silver and 14-year-old Luca Sinnott a bronze, despite being the second fastest British swimmer in the field.

There was also a second place for 15-year-old Freddie Cornwell in the 200m backstroke and third in the 100m backstroke. Bradley Slavinec was also the third-placed 17-year-old in the 1500 freestyle.

In total, Barnet Copthall boasted 20 swimmers who achieved the national qualifying times needed to enter the competition and 22 top-ten finishes across all events, whilst 80 per cent of swimmers set new personal bests.

Head coach Rhys Gormley said: “The swimmers did an outstanding job at the most important competition of the year.

“Eight out of 10 swims were lifetime bests showing the swimmers stepped up to the plate and performed exceptionally well at the most pressurised swim meet in the calendar. I am proud of them all.”
