A community group celebrated the “astonishing” first year of the park they transformed into a hive of activity.

Hundreds took to Childs Hill Park, in Granville Road, for a summer party to celebrate the green space, which was officially opened in August 2013.

Children were immersed in the arts and crafts activities on offer, played chess and table tennis and planted their own flowers in pots.

Talia Fogelman, 15, was also named the winner of the Friends of Child Hill Park’s photography competition for her shot of a climbing frame. (Below).

Ingrid Posen, chairman of the community group, said: “It was fantastic. There was an enormous mixed community which was just lovely.

“The kids had a terrific time. They turned up and just wouldn’t move away from all the games and attractions we had to offer.

“It was a great way to mark this milestone.”

Friends of Childs Hill Park hope register as a charity this autumn and 15 new families signed on to the group at the event.

Barnet Borough Council and Trusts for London helped the group transform the park from a dilapidated green space into a community hub.

Mrs Posen added: “It has been a really astonishing year. When we set out, people were very pessimistic because there wasn’t enough money to keep the park in the way we wanted.

“It was a bit sad, there was nothing for the children to play with and the equipment was past it. But now, it’s made such a difference.

“Everyone remarks how happy the park is now and everything is looking beautiful and clean. It’s the most wonderful playground. It is very loved and very busy.”
