Park users have condemned the “disgusting” state of toilets in a park.

Regular visitors to Edgwarebury Park, in Edgwarebury Lane, Edgware, are angry about the condition the disabled toilets are left in.

Ruth Adley, who has bowel disorder Crohn’s disease, said: “For six weeks at least, the disabled toilet has been disgusting. I thought I was going to be sick. I rang the council numerous times. It was cleaned last week, but the light doesn’t work, and there’s no soap. It’s no good cleaning it and then not fixing the light.

“I get so angry because disabled people need it desperately. I need it because of my condition. There’s nowhere else to go, it’s terrible. I need to walk my dog and it’s the nearest place.

“The park itself is kept in a beautiful state. If they put as much effort into the toilet facilities as they do the flowers, everybody would be raving about it.”

Ms Adley, 58, who lives in Leavesden Road, Stanmore, uses the park about four times a week. She explained that the main toilets are also an issue.

She said: “The main toilets are only open when there’s football matches on. They say that they’re not open because of vandalism.

“The council has spent a lot of money on new equipment for the kids, as well as gym equipment. They want to encourage families to come, but I wouldn’t want to be there too long if I had kids. People have to time what they are doing around it.

“The park is also used by a lot of elderly people. I have been going there for about four years, but the toilet is getting worse and worse. It should be regularly cleaned.”

Penny Benn, 27, from Broadfields Estate in Edgware, regularly visits the park with her two children, aged three and 16 months. She said: “Having no toilet is very inconvenient. Having clean toilets would enhance our experience. I come two or three times a week, sometimes more. It would benefit me and my children.”

Samuel Fine, 76, from Mill Hill, agreed that the toilets are an issue. He said: “It’s frustrating because you have to leave the park to go. Doing the walk is difficult because I am waiting for a hip replacement.

“Hundreds of people use this park and it’s not fair on them. There are many people who don’t use it because there are no facilities. It’s prehistoric not to have toilets operating.”

A Barnet Council spokesman said: “We are sorry for any inconvenience caused. We have a new cleaning contractor starting in the very near future and are looking into increasing the frequency of the cleaning regime for parks toilets.”
