There could soon be a new selection of councillors to choose from following an information event.

More than ten people attended an open evening at Hertsmere Borough Council about what being a councillor involves.

The evening, held at the Civic Offices in Borehamwood, included talks from councillors Morris Bright, Ann Harrison and Harvey Cohen along with an opportunity for people to ask questions to a panel of councillors.

Cllr Bright, leader of the council, said: “It was great to see the event well attended and meet some of our residents who are passionate about the area and making a difference where they live.

“We are conscious our councillors should reflect the local community we represent so I really hope the event helped raise awareness of becoming a local councillor among our diverse population.”

From 2015, all councillors will be up for election every four years, as opposed to being elected by thirds – meaning next year will be the first whole council election.

Leader of the Labour group, Cllr Ann Harrison, said: "With all-out elections for Hertsmere Borough Council next May there will be 39 seats up for election and a great opportunity for those interested in becoming a councillor to put themselves up for election."
