A peace celebration “livened up” a high street as hundreds gathered for the annual event.

Shops in High Road, in North Finchley, took part in Peace One Day, a national event run by the United Nations.

Activities included a scavenger hunt for children to identify the different areas of North Finchley and learn more about its history.

There was a barbecue at The Bohemia pub, Cafe Buzz offered ethnic food tasting and the Tally Ho pub gave out free fruit.

Jeffrey Newman, a former Rabbi at Finchley Synagogue, said: “It was fantastic. The generosity of the local shops was amazing.

“We wanted to demonstrate that we have a diverse and ethnic culture here and things are really livening up for the area.”

The event was also attended by Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers, who spent time meeting the various people who helped organise the day.

The day was mainly organised by Cafe Buzz owner Helen Michael and Andrew Jacobs of the North London Citizens group.

Mr Newman added: “It was a superb way to celebrate world peace.”
