Unemployment figures fell across the borough in the past year.

Figures released last week by the Office for National Statistics show that 1,653 fewer people claimed Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) in Barnet in August this year compared to August 2013.

There was an overall fall of 0.7 per cent in the year.

The figures also show a breakdown of claimant numbers in the borough's three parliamentary constituencies.

In Finchley and Golders Green, 511 fewer people claiming JSA, while Hendon had a drop of 606 people, and Chipping Barnet 536.

Mike Freer, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, welcomed the figures.

He said: "Another 511 people off Jobseeker's Allowance means 511 people who are able to provide for their families.

"I am delighted that the economy continues to grow and the figures are a testament to the hard work of businesses locally.

"The Conservatives' long term economic plan is working and the economy is back on track."

Sarah Sackman, prospective parliamentary candidate for Finchley and Golders Green, also welcomed the figures, although she expressed caution.

"Clearly, the news on jobs is welcome. The new jobs have been created by local businesses despite Conservative policies, not because of them.

"People are showing great determination but that's people making the best of the situation.

"The recovery still has a very long way to go. People say they are no better off than they were five years ago."
