A school reached out to a homeless shelter as it celebrated its harvest festival.

Queenswell Infant School, in Sweets Way, Whetstone, raised money for Homeless Action in Barnet (HAB) day centre last Friday.

As part of celebrations, some children performed a short piece that outlined the story of how harvest festivals began.

Pupils also sang songs to promote the importance of giving to people who have nothing.

Kristy Charitoll, reception teacher and music co-ordinator said: "We wanted the children to understand not only why we celebrate this event, but why and where all of the school's donations were going to.

“We worked hard to organise this special event as it is important that the children know that they are helping towards such an important cause."

Children brought in a variety of foods including cereals, fruit and vegetables as part of the school's contribution to the day centre Year 1 pupil Aaryan said: "We are helping people who don't have anything. I think we raised hundreds."

HAB offers help to people who are sad and lonely, with nowhere to go. As well as providing food and shelter, the centre encourages people to look forward by helping them to find employment.

Volunteer Yael Stark said: "HAB is all about empowerment. It is a place of change, one that helps people to help themselves by looking forward and finding a way out of their situation."
