A football club will soon build new changing rooms after receiving a grant of more than £200,000.

Whetstone Wanderers Youth FC has received £216,724 from the Football Foundation, the UK’s largest sports charity.

Based at Woodside Park Club in Southover, the club has 38 teams, which range from under sevens to under 18s, as well as a team for young adults with learning disabilities.

Club chairman Alan Kelsey said: “New changing rooms will be the icing on the cake. It will make a massive difference, as it will allow us to play more games. It will help us provide more football at our home ground."

Mr Kelsey, who has been chairman for eight years and lives in Barnet, added: “The current changing rooms are not fit for purpose. The money opens up more opportunities, and helps secure a future for the club.”

Club secretary Danny Jackson, 62, said: “We are incredibly excited. They will make a phenomenal difference for the kids who play for the club. The current changing rooms are appalling, and no one uses them. Schools can use them during the daytime too.”

Mr Jackson, who lives in Edgware and has been involved with the club since 2007 as a coach, added: “The club is growing all the time. The enjoyment the kids get from playing football is great to see. The good thing about the club is that it’s very welcoming to everybody. They all mix together well.”

The money will come from the Premier League, The FA Facilities Fund and Sport England.

Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, said: “We want to encourage as many people as possible to get themselves involved in the game, and with professional clubs, schools and casual players enjoying the excellent facilities the Premier League helps fund, we will achieve that aim.”
