A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a bus overturned this morning.

Police officers were called at 8.24am to reports of a crash between a double decker bus and a white Vauxhall Corsa in St Albans Road, between Dancer’s Hill and junction 23 of the M25 in South Mimms.

Eight people, including a 40-year-old woman who was driving the Vauxhall, received serious injuries. Seven were taken to Barnet Hospital and one to the Lister Hospital.

A total of 37 other people on board the UNO bus received minor injuries, and were taken to the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Welwyn Garden City.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) was called at 8.24am and sent six ambulances, the air ambulance and the Trust’s hazardous area response team (HART) to assess and treat 87 patients.

The road has been closed to allow emergency services to work at the scene.

A University of Hertfordshire spokesman said: "The university is aware that a number of students were travelling on an UNO bus involved in a road traffic incident this morning on the A1081 in Barnet. Members of the university community are being supported by the Office of Dean of Students."

Darren Meads, EEAST’s senior locality manager for North East Hertfordshire, said: “Although this incident involved a large number of potential patients, we had resources on scene quickly and were able to start assessing and treating those in need as soon as possible.

“Our crews did a fantastic job in assessing and treating such a large number of casualties and ensuring that they got the care they needed quickly. We do extensive planning and preparation for incidents like this one, which means when they do happen we are able to provide the best possible response.”
