A cancer pop-up shop had more than 1,500 visitors in the short time it was open.
Specialist nurses and experts from Cancer Research UK gave advice and support about cancer at the Get to Know Cancer shop, in the Broadwalk Shopping Centre from September 23 to October 12.
Blood pressure and body mass index tests were also on offer at the centre, in Station Road, Edgware.
The shop reached 1,547 adults and 156 children, and 15 per cent of those who had a consultation were referred onto their GP for further treatment.
Councillor Helena Hart, chairman of the health and wellbeing board, said: “I am delighted to see that the pop-up shop was such a success.
“The key to beating cancer is early detection and the cancer pop-up shop has made a fantastic start at pushing this message in Barnet.”
Dr Andrew Howe, director of public health for Barnet and Harrow, said: “The get to know cancer pop-up shop was a great opportunity for anyone who had any concerns about cancer to talk to a specialist nurse in an informal environment but we urge those who weren’t able to see us during our time at The Broadwalk Centre to speak to their GP if they have any worries.”
The project was funded by Barnet Borough Council's public health funds, with The Broadwalk Centre providing the space free of charge.
