More than 4,000 fixed penalty notices were issued for driving offences in Barnet last year, new figures show.

Road safety charity Brake released the figures as it launched its Road Safety Week earlier this week.

Across the borough, 3,960 fixed penalty notices were issued for speeding, and 104 for careless driving, which became a fixed penalty offence in August 2013.

Barnet’s worst postcode was HA8, which covers Edgware and parts of Burnt Oak, with a total of 740 offences in 2013.

The second highest figures were from NW9, which covers Colindale, the Grahame Park estate and parts of West Hendon, with a total of 604 offences last year.

The lowest figures were from N2, which covers East Finchley, with 212 offences last year.

The figures relate to the home address of the offender, not the location where the offence occurred.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake, said: "When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness. Ultimately, we're all just human beings trying to get around, with equal right to use the roads, not competing tribes."

Across London, a total of 73,804 fixed penalty notices were issued, 2,275 for careless driving and 71,529 for speeding.
