The former club of an Australian cricketer who died after being struck by a ball has paid tribute to the player.

Batsman Phillip Hughes died today after being hit by a bouncer while playing for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

In 2009 he played for Middlesex County Cricket Club and also had spells with Hampshire, and Worcestershire.

In a statement his former club said: “Middlesex County Cricket Club is devastated on hearing the tragic news concerning the passing of Phillip Hughes.

“The thoughts and love of everyone at the club goes out to Phil’s family and friends during this terrible time.

“Phil was a bright, talented and fun young man, who made a huge impression on the club during his brief stay here at Lord’s. Middlesex CCC is proud that he represented the club.

“Out of respect to Phil and his family, the club and its staff will be making no further public comment.”

The club also says all official training for today and tomorrow has been cancelled and the flags at Lords will fly at half mast.
