Decision-making at Barnet Borough Council almost came to a halt in June after it emerged the authority had made errors in the way its committee members were allocated.

An urgent investigation was launched after councillors were told the allocation of seats had been “flawed and invalid”.

However after seeking legal advice, the authority said decisions made by committees would be valid until membership could be reshuffled at the full council meeting in July.

Questions were also raised over the legality of Barnet Borough Council’s allowances payments to councillors.

It emerged that the last scheme of members’ allowances – which were approved on September 14, 2010 – had expired on March 31.

Mayor of Barnet Councillor Hugh Rayner then came under fire for failing to declare he was a landlord when voting on controversial housing policies.

GLA member for Barnet Andrew Dismore accused Cllr Rayner of acting “illegally” regarding housing benefit claimants living in the properties he owns.

A panel of councillors cleared Cllr Rayner of wrongdoing in July.

In June, neighbours said a supermarket turned their once quiet street into “bedlam".

After Tesco opened in Glengall Road, Edgware, people reported traffic clogged streets, a lack of parking spaces and incessant litter blowing in front of gardens, as well as a lack of parking spaces.

Finally, a mental health nurse who drove away from a row with a drunken woman on her bonnet was sentenced to six months in jail.

Ophelia Oka-Koi , 52, of Galdana Avenue, High Barnet, was found guilty of causing death by careless driving after the death of Christie McHugh in East Barnet Road on March 4 last year.
