A migrant hiding under a lorry from France was killed while trying to get out on a busy motorway near Potters Bar.

The man was one of two Sudanese men who wedged themselves onto the underside of a foreign HGV in the French port of Calais at around 11am yesterday.

They vehicle went through the Channel Tunnel and headed to London where it joined the M25, with the men still clinging on underneath.

After suffering freezing temperatures, they tried to free themselves while the vehicle was stationary in the left lane, between junction 24 (Potters Bar) and junction 25 (Waltham Cross).

The first man managed to work himself free and clambered down a nearby grass verge, but as the second man attempted to do so the vehicle began moving again.

He is then believed to have fallen under the back wheels of the lorry, suffering fatal injuries.

A member of the public stopped his vehicle and pulled the injured man to the edge of the carriageway, before driving off.

A second member of the public stopped his vehicle and offered assistance.

An air ambulance was called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

One man was detained by officers on suspicion of immigration offences but he had not suffered injuries.

Officers are keen to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident and would like to hear from anyone who saw the collision take place.
