People receiving council tax support could end up having to pay more than double the amount they currently pay.

Barnet Council's policy and resources committee will meet at Hendon Town Hall tomorrow evening, to discuss proposals to raise the contribution rates for people receiving support from 8.5 per cent to 15 or 20 per cent.

A third option is to continue the current scheme, with people making a contribution of 8.5 per cent to their council tax bill.

Council tax support (CTS), run by the authority, helps people on low incomes or benefits pay their council tax.

A band D council tax payer, who receives the support, currently has to make a £119 contribution for the 2014/15 financial year.

However, this will rise to £210.16 if the contribution rate is raised to 15 per cent, and to £280.21 if it is raised to 20 per cent.

The council held two public consultations on the proposals last year, which both found that the highest level of support was for the contribution rate to remain at 8.5 per cent.

The committee will decide which option to recommend to full council next week, who will vote on the matter.
