Three chefs from Age UK Barnet’s cookery classes for older men showed what they could do on a television talk show.

Gerald Haines, 87, Syd McGowan, 72, and Michael Moody, 68, cooked up a tasty chicken casserole with dumplings on air with Mel and Sue on ITV.

Joining Gerald, Syd and Michael on last Friday’s show were Jo Brand and Dr Christian Jessen of Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies.

Mr McGowan chopped the vegetables while Mr Moody prepared the chicken and Mr Haines made the dumplings – with Jo Brand and Mel and Sue as their helpers.

Mr Haines said: “It was one of the best experiences of my life – everyone made us feel so comfortable that I didn’t feel nervous.”

The three were invited on after the producer of Mel and Sue spotted a piece about Age UK Barnet’s older men cookery classes in the Times Series.

Mr Moody said: ‘We felt really looked after and Mel and Sue put us completely at ease.”

Mr McGowan said: “It’s odd having six huge cameras on you the whole time, but as soon as you go live, you forget they’re there.”
