Motorists who own vehicles with high emissions could be charged more for their parking permits.

Barnet Council’s environment committee agreed on Tuesday to refer a new policy, which proposes to charge motorists based on the amount of CO2 their vehicles emit, to the policy and resources committee.

The lowest band, for cars that emit under 110g CO2, will cost £30 a year, with the middle band for cars emitting between 111 to 200g of CO2 costing £40 and the highest band, for more than 200g CO2, costing £60 a year.

Around 70 per cent of current permits are expected to be issued to the middle band.

Electric car owners will also be able to apply for a free green permit, which previously cost £15.

The policy will go to the policy and resources committee for approval.
