A blind club where people have a “whale of a time” is looking for new members.

Hertsmere’s Visually Impaired Club (VIC), which is held at the Maxwell Park Centre, in Borehamwood, only has ten people in its books – the same amount it started out with when it opened two years ago.

The club meets every Friday afternoon and is open to anyone who lives in Borehamwood and Potters Bar, is blind and wants to make new friends.

Club secretary David Clout chose to be optimistic about the club's low membership.

He said: “The glass is half full and we are still hopeful for the future of our wonderful club, but we desperately need new members.

“I know there are a lot of blind people in the area and we are desperate to help them get out and see what the club has to offer.

“The more you put in, the more you get out. People have a whale of a time here.”

Mr Clout is also appealing for people to help drive members to the centre and volunteers to run and take part in activities.

When it first opened, the group was offered a £1,500 grant to buy games such as large Braille playing cards and Scrabble.

Mr Clout, a grandfather, added: “Some people would love to come here but are nervous – and if you’re blind, going to somewhere completely new where you aren’t familiar with the surroundings can be daunting.

“If you can spare Friday afternoons, why not bring some light into the lives of blind or partially sighted members of our community and enjoy yourself joining in the various activities of the club.”
