People looking for work got a helping hand at a jobs fair.

Twenty employers attended the fair at the Green Man Community Centre, in East Finchley on Friday, including McDonalds, Transport for London and the NHS.

Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer, who has organised the fair for the past four years, said he expected about 600 people to attend.

Mr Freer said: “It can be daunting for young people looking for jobs. So much is electronic, which is fine, but it’s often quite remote and anonymous. At least here they can talk to a human being, discuss their circumstances and find out if it’s for them. It’s a good recruitment drive.”

Jobseeker Peter Adae-Mensah, 27, of Watford, welcomed the help with his job hunt.

He said: “I’ve spoken to a few employers, and they gave me a lot of useful information and contact details. I think it’s better seeing people face to face, you get more information.”

As well as the companies offering job opportunities, employment and training advisers from Barnet Borough Council and other companies were also on hand to help jobseekers.

Jeff Thomas, who works at Peabody, said: “I am confident we will be able to link quite a few people with employment. Last year we were successful, and I don’t see it being any different this year. Hopefully people will get something out of it.”

Kerry Riley, at TfL, said: “We have had a lot of interest, there’s a real mix of people coming through the door. It’s good for them to find out what employers are looking for.”
