SAM TORRANCE has urged Colin Montgomerie to raise his game fast or see his Ryder Cup dreams bunkered.

Slammin' Sam warned his fellow Scot sentiment will not guarantee him a place at Valhalla in September.

Monty has been a Ryder Cup hero and his performance in 2006 was crucial in helping Europe defeat America.

But Torrance reckons Monty needs to get his finger out to convince skipper Nick Faldo to pick him as a wildcard.

He said: "Monty will have to improve his game between now and September and play better if he is to be a straight wildcard pick.

"Monty finishing second in France recently was great, but he really needs to do it again.

"It's all very well that he has been a fantastic team member in the past, but unless he's going to be an asset, Nick Faldo would have to think strongly about picking him."

Torrance spoke out as he geared up for this week's British Seniors Open at Troon.

And he admitted the display of 53-year-old Greg Norman in The Open at Royal Birkdale had put him in the box seat as the favourite.

He said: "Watching greg last week was inspirational and I can't wait to get out there.

"Is Greg favourite. I should bloody well hope so. He played great and looked like he turned the clock back 25 years to be honest."

Coming from Largs, Torrance can expect plenty of support along the Ayrshire coast.

And he reckons the Troon course will suit some of the game's veteran superstars such as Tom Watson and Ian Wosnam.

He said: "I think some of the old guys can do well on a sea links golf course. You don't have to be super long, you have to play the course as it is."
