The Times Series has asked each parliamentary candidate to list five reasons why they should become an MP at the General Election on May 7.

Here Liberal Democrat candidate for Hendon Alasdair Hill explains why you should vote for him.

1. Education - In my political, professional and personal life, education is my number one priority. A good education is the best route towards success and offering opportunity for everyone. As a state-school teacher I see this daily; an experience that parliament is in desperate need of. My party introduced the Pupil Premium; additional funding to disadvantaged schoolchildren that has brought in over £17million to Hendon students. If I am elected I will push for the Pupil Premium to be extended to early years in an education budget that will be protected in real terms. I will ensure all pupils are taught by qualified teachers and that every child will have a core curriculum that includes finance and relationship lessons.

2. Libraries - Education doesn’t end with schools. Libraries play a vital part in supporting children as well as extending learning into the community. That is why I have thought tooth and nail against the local Tories’ cuts to Barnet Libraries; I organised the 9,000-strong petition and have spoken up for everyone. My ability to garner cross-party support highlights a refreshing approach to politics.

3. Green policies - As an environmental science graduate I am proud of the fact that this government has been the greenest ever. Thanks to the Lib Dems we have seen offshore wind energy double bringing renewable energy production to 20 per cent of total energy. I will prioritise further renewables, improve biodiversity protection and promote greener transport through the Lib Dem's five green laws.

4. Rise in income tax personal allowance - The Liberal Democrats made a tough choice going into coalition. With more than 70 per cent of our manifesto enacted I believe it was the right choice. Our economy is improving fairly with a £905 tax cut to workers through the increase in personal allowance. The Tories said it wasn’t possible but we have managed to do it. I will continue to reduce the tax you pay on your wages by increasing the personal allowance to £12,500.

5. Common sense economics - A vote for me and the Liberal Democrats is a vote for common-sense economics to get this country moving again fairly, offering support to families and ensuring Hendon has the world class education it deserves.
