Neighbours took matters into their own hands after inaction over “disgusting” litter near their homes.

People living in Thornfield Avenue and Mill Court, spent their Saturday clearing litter and rubbish left in the shrubbery near Holders Hill Road, in Hendon.

They say the area has been reduced to a “rubbish dump” but talks with Barnet Borough Council have proved futile as the bushes sit on part of Mill Road that is privately owned.

Tania Sabl said: “This unhygienic eyesore is directly by the bus stop and not only is it very unsightly, it is a terrible example to the young generation.

“And with rats and vermin no doubt running round it must be a real health hazard. The shrubbery is an important green oasis, not only as a refuge for wildlife but also for the residents of Mill Court.

“I pass the shrubbery daily and I do mind what my neighbourhood looks like.”

The majority of the litter cleared on Saturday was on the pavement near the 240 bus stop.

The neighbours are now calling for litter bins outside the newsagents, as they say the paper slips from the cash machines end up on the ground.

Ms Sabl added: “The council says it would be difficult to trace the owner.

“The council should not tolerate this. It is a disgusting eyesore of accumulated rubbish, it’s literally a rubbish dump and no doubt a health hazard.

“There is an urgent need for new litter bins.”

In a statement, Barnet Council said: “Keeping roads and pavements clean is a top priority for the council and this is reflected in the fact that we have allocated £3.8 million to maintain high standards across the borough. All Barnet roads and pavements are monitored, litter picked and cleaned regularly.”

“Mill Road is a private road – the council is not responsible for maintaining or cleaning the pavement or roads on it.”
