A poll has shown Labour inching ahead of the Conservatives in Finchley and Golders Green as the General Election approaches.

The constituency polling report, conducted last week by Lord Ashcroft, puts Labour ahead by two points on 43 per cent, and the Conservatives on 41 per cent.

Six per cent of people surveyed said they would vote for the Lib Dems, six per cent for UKIP and four per cent for the Greens.

However, Lord Ashcroft points out on his blog that the lead is “well within the margin of error.”

Overall, the poll recorded a seven per cent swing from Conservative to Labour since the 2010 general election.

Voters were also found to be optimistic about the economy, with 71 per cent in Finchley and Golders Green saying they felt it would do well for the country over the next year, and 23 per cent badly.

Labour also appears to be winning the ground war, with 60 per cent of people saying they had been contacted by the party in last few weeks, compared to 34 per cent from the Conservatives, ten per cent from the Lib Dems and 15 per cent from UKIP.

The seat was previously held by Labour from 1997 until 2010, when former Barnet Council leader Mike Freer won it for the Conservatives.

Mr Freer will contest the seat again in the general election on May 7. Other candidates include Sarah Sackman for Labour, Jonathan Davies for the Liberal Democrats, Adele Ward for the Green Party and Richard King for UKIP.
