A cemetery has become a “tragic dumping ground” for unwanted newborn pets, an animal charity has claimed.

Three abandoned kittens were found at Tottenham Cemetery, in White Hart Lane, last week and taken to Wood Green, The Animals Charity.

They say their rescue centre on Lordship Lane has seen an influx of kittens and pregnant cats, who were discovered in busy cemetery.

Late spring marks the arrival of ‘kitten season’ in the UK, when more litters are born than any other time.

Wood Green want to ensure people know how important it is to get their pets neutered to prevent unexpected pregnancies.

Caroline Johnson, centre manager at Wood Green’s London branch, said: “It’s beginning to seem like not a month goes by when we don’t get someone bring cats or kittens to us which have been deliberately left in that particular cemetery.

“Our centre is so close that people often make us their first stop with their discovery, hoping we can help find the animal a good home quickly.

“What’s so tragic is that the cost of neutering need not be expensive as voucher options are available. Abandoning animals in this way is unforgivable and it’s horrible for us to witness that Tottenham Cemetery now seems to be becoming known as a tragic dumping ground.”
