A by-election will be held in Hampstead Garden Suburb.

Conservative Councillor Daniel Seal stood down earlier this year after he faced backlash for missing 34 out of 65 council meetings since he was elected in 2010.

People will cast their votes on Thursday, May 7 at the same time as the parliamentary elections.

Although Hampstead Garden Suburb is a staunch Tory ward, nearby Hampstead has a strong Labour presence.

The 2014 elections saw one of the closest ever elections in Barnet, with the Conservatives retaining power but by a majority of just one. Cllr Jack Cohen is the only Liberal Democrat representative.

If Labour were to win the vacant seat, each party would have 31 elected councillors which could trigger a coalition.

The candidates who will contest the seat are Rohit Grover for the Conservatives, Adele Ward for the Green Party, Janet Solomons for Labour, Altan Akbiyik for the Liberal Democrats and Barry Ryan, for UKIP.
