Army cadets and reservists joined ex-servicemen and women for a parade to mark Armed Forces Day.

The ceremony on Sunday, June 28 also saw a flag raised above Hendon Town Hall to show the borough’s support for the forces past and present.

In his address, Barnet mayor Councillor Mark Shooter paid tribute to 101-year-old veteran Louis Martin who was present at the parade and who was recently appointed Chevalier in the Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur for his service as a captain in the Rifle Brigade during the Second World War.

He also acknowledged members of the Burnt Oak Nepalese Community and Brigade of Gurkhas Association who took part in the ceremony, and the contribution made by local army reservists.

Cllr Shooter said: “It was a tremendous privilege to take part in this year’s Armed Forces Day parade and to pay tribute to those who serve their country.

“They often work in very difficult circumstances and this parade was an excellent way for the borough to publically acknowledge the great debt of gratitude we owe all those currently serving in the armed forces and those who have served in the past.”

Barnet cadets company commander major Jim Panell said: "The Army Cadets from across Barnet are always pleased to help and support Armed Forces Day, it's an important part of the cadet force ethos to remember and support those who have and are still serving in the armed forces."
