They say dogs are a man’s best friend – and hundreds of people have proven that to be true by raising £800 to help an injured pooch.

Donna Richardson, of Oakmere, Potters Bar, launched an online fundraising campaign after her friend’s dog, Bilbo, was hit by a car just before his first birthday last year.

He broke his back but after surgery, he was fitted with a pair of wheels on his hind legs to help him walk and run.

But Donna, 33, decided to ask the public for donations to help Bilbo get the massage, swimming and acupuncture sessions he needs to make a recovery.

In less than three weeks, she has raised £800.

Donna said: "We are so very grateful for all the kindness people have shown in donating so much money through the GoFundMe campaign towards alternative treatments for Bilbo.

“It is astonishing that so many people across the world have been touched by his story and have dug into their pockets to help him.”

Bilbo belongs to Kate Donovan, who lives in Worcestershire.
