Work is underway on a £50m programme to improve Barnet’s roads and pavements over five years.

The programme will see Barnet council spend a total of £15m this year, including £6.8m on pavements, £5.4m on roads and £2.8m on repainting road markings and other repairs.

The authority says more than 130 areas have been prioritised for work, with an emphasis on potholes and roads that have been difficult to repair in the past.

The borough has one of the capital’s largest networks of roads and pavements, with more than five million square metres of roads and 3.5million square metres of pavements.

Councillor Dean Cohen, chairman of Barnet council’s environment committee, said: “We know the standard of our roads and pavements is a top priority for our residents, which is why we are rolling out this investment programme over the next five years.

“We are a large borough and our roads get a lot of wear and tear from the high volume of traffic travelling along them each day. We want our residents to be able go about their lives safely and easily so we are investing in keeping our roads and pavements in good condition."
