IT has been a tense few months for A-level students – but relief set in yesterday when they got their results.

A total of 11 out of 14 pupils from Woodhouse College, in Finchley, were accepted to Oxbridge while others are off to study at Ivy League universities in America, medical school and Russell Group univerisites

The history department achieved particularly outstanding results, with 17 gaining an A*.

Maxime Singleton, 18, from Archway, achieved four A*s but rejected Cambridge to study at Leeds, while Miranda Ziemann, 18, will study maths at Warwick after four A*s.

Meanwhile, Barnet and Southgate College pupil Lara Hegarty, 19, from Friern Barnet, had a challenging start after doing not so well in her AS levels, but turned things around for her A2s.

She achieved A’s in sociology and English literature and a B in politics and plans to study politics at the University of Sheffield.

She said: “I love the Wood Street campus – we are treated like adults and work independently.”

At Mount Grace School, in Potters Bar, over 40 students accepted places at universities. Maddie Bradley, Sophie Edwards, Mattie Fordham and Rose Kerber were amongst the students who achieved three A or distinctions in their A-levels.

Headteacher Peter Baker said: “I would like to congratulate all our hard-working students on their success this year.

“I know their families and their teachers will be very proud of what they have achieved. I am sure they will now be looking forward to the next stage of their lives with a great deal of excitement.”

Meanwhile, pupils at Bishop Douglass School in Barnet achieved a 99 per cent pass rate with 82 per cent of the grades at A*-C and 65 per cent at A* to B.

A strong performance at Whitefield School saw the percentage of A2 level passes at grades A* to B remain high at 20.78 per cent.

Assistant headteacher Desrae Le Roux said: “These fabulous results reflect the dedication of staff and students at Whitefield School plus the ongoing support of our supportive parents. We look forward to welcoming and preparing the next intake of students into our expanding sixth form who we know will have equally high aspirations and will go on to achieve excellent results once again next year.”
