POLICE will take to the streets for a campaign against burglary next week.
Hundreds of officers will visit schools, train stations and shopping centres to give advice on keeping homes safe during winter as part of the ‘clocks, locks and lights’ initiative on Monday (October 12).
They will be supported by volunteers from the London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, Barnet Council and charities from across the borough.
It follows from last year’s campaign, and will aim to spread awareness of crime prevention before the clocks go back on Sunday, October 25 – the time of year when burglary tends to increase.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Usher, Barnet Borough Commander, said: “Experience tells us that during the winter months burglars target houses in darkness. You can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of burglary by making your home look as if you’re in when you’re out.
“Leaving a radio, television or a table lamp on or a timer switch when it is dark can deter burglars. Good locks and bolts on doors, especially the back door, and windows are essential.”
